Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Diana's picture

OK, if you don't know me well, you may not know that I hate sports metaphors. So rather than going for something like, "She shoots, she scores!", I decided to settle for the Pulitzer.

All this fuss is because Community Acupuncture on Cape Cod made the local daily paper today, in a big way: http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080110/LIFE/80...

I'm not sure if this link is going to take you directly to the story, but if it doesn't, you can go to our website, http://www.acuforall.com and on the right side of the home page, click on "Read about us in the Cape Cod Times".

This article took two years to become newsworthy. That is to say, two years ago, when I converted the clinic to Community Acupuncture, I began sending the daily paper press releases about us, and following up with phone calls. This past November, when I sent a press release about the East Coast Community Acupuncture training that Andy, Cris and I offered here on the Cape, they finally got interested.

The newspaper version is even better than the on line version -- five photos, and a color banner with a photo advertising the story on the front page!

We are beside ourselves with excitement.

If you read the story, I would love comments. The only error was the date we started doing Community style -- 2 years ago, not last month! Everything else is a surprisingly accurate representation of what I said. It's interesting to me that the paper felt compelled to find an acupuncturist with an opposing view. And like one of the Portland papers, they pushed the blue collar aspect, which I did not emphasize heavily when we talked. (In the newspaper version, the headline is "Will Working Class Acupuncture Work for You?". I tried to get them to talk about our national movement, even gave them contact info on the Providence, RI and Manchester, NH clinics, but of course, they go where they want to go, and I guess they liked the title working class acupuncture better than community acupuncture network.

Hey Diana,
That's a great article. Congrats to you all.

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Congratulations, Diana, that's a good article and you represent CA very well. Nice photo online.
I like how the article says you encourage patients "to stay until they find themselves naturally coming out of the relaxed state induced by the treatment." Well-phrased.

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Loved the article... except the end with Putz er Patz. WTF??? But as I said, otherwise a good article. You can bat cleanup anytime in the Movement. ;)

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Great article, I hope some day to have one with the sound and feel of that article.

Thank you all, and Skip, thank goodness I have Melody to translate your sporting metaphor for me -- turns out you were complimenting me!

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

"The ambience here is different," said Patz, who also incorporates massage and other practices into his acupuncture sessions. "It's people feeling cared for."...

...not for nothin', but what does Patz & the author McCormick think is going on in Diana's CA clinic - people not getting cared for?

Otherwise a lovely article.

Rock on, Diana...
I'd say you deserve a slow trot 'round the bases for this one.

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Congrats, Diana! I agree with Andy and Skip - good except for the last bit (and I also agree with David's post above). In fact, it's telling that Patz says people "feeling" cared for, not BEING cared for. So there's that. Also, I found his suit metaphor super classist. It's both completely wrong (we DO give individually "tailored" treatments) and completely right-on (because BESPOKE SUITS are hardly something most people can afford - not to mention most of our patients not being regular suit-wearers in general).

To continue for a moment with the sartorial metaphor, even the finest Savile Row tailor is still working within the basic constraints of the suit idiom, just as Patz, in his role as an acupuncturist, is working with more or less the same points and tools as the rest of us. I agree with the implication that hand-crafted things have a helluva lot more qi than mass-produced things (e.g. those "off the rack" schmattes!), but acupuncture is ALWAYS done by hand, as far as I know. So the comparison doesn't really hold.

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Hurrah, Diana! considering how inaccurate many newspaper articles are, I thought it was good. Don't sweat the Patz's of the world. They have their clientele (and prices...) we have ours. I know we're having more fun!

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Congrats Diana!!! What a great article. I fall in line with Skip, Andy & Nora about Patz. Great exposure and nice photo. Hope you are doing well. Happy New Year!

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Have you gotten calls? You will. Nobody who calls will care at all about the comments re: care or the suit thing...and, at least it's not their birthday suit they are in while being treated. Whew. They will like the price and stay for your warm, wonderful healing.

Whereas, Putz will get all of the suits he deserves as well.

Great job! You really hit one outta the park! (couldn't end w/out some sport thing for ya)

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Thanks everyone, here's an update-- We are slammed with calls, maybe 15-20 new patients booked since yesterday morning. We have lots of other marketing stuff coming right up, as we had no idea when (or if) the paper was going to run this, so it is a big avalanche, but I think we are prepared to flow with it.

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Congratulations, Diana! Especially on your persistence in getting the media's attention. I knew you'd get inundated with new patients as a result! It's a good thing you recruited your comrades (volunteers, clinic manager, fellow acupuncturist) when you did -- you're gonna need everybody to handle the inflow. I have a feeling this is just the beginning.

Re: Cape Cod Clinic Wins Pulitzer

Great article! The general point comes across nicely and I suspect you will be more consistently booked for a long while due to the local press.

Congrats,

Moses
