Recent Locate-A-Clinic News - Almost July 2009
CAN recently asked for the clinics listed on the Locate-A-Clinic page (full-time community-style clinics) to report the number of treatments they'd given over the period from March 1st to May 31st, 2009 - a three month time frame.
After a week of feedback and ~ 45 responses, we've got......36,000 treatments.
12,000 per month. And this number in the bigger picture is most likely much higher.
Consider: The potentially large number of clinics who are offering community-style treatments, but are not associated with CAN, or those who are doing so on a part-time basis and so weren't included in our fast polling last week.
It may not be unrealistic to estimate 20,000 treatments are currently received each month inside community-style acupuncture clinics in the US, Canada and elsewhere.....perhaps 240,000 or more over 12 months....
Hearing these numbers make us want to run up and down the stairs as fast as we can.

...And now the bad news.
The site is undergoing some updates, and will likely be without the above mentioned Locate-A-Clinic (LOC) listing for a few more days.
In addition please check the Announcements forum for general site downtime updates over the next week or so. We don't anticipate any extended downtime, only wee bits.
We've posted an ad-hoc list of the LOC clinics here should anybody like to grab this information in the meantime. Thanks for everybody's patience while your site gets tuned-up and ready for the next stretch of highway ahead.

what makes me most hopeful about these numbers
is not even all of the patients getting acupuncture, though that is spectacular, it's all of the acupuncturists being slowly transformed by doing all of those treatments. Skip (Mr. Former Geologist) and I refer to it as the "glacial grinding" process of community acupuncture. The more acupuncture you do, the more real people you meet, the more you change. The more you realize how much of what you learned in school makes NO SENSE AT ALL. The more patients you start to love, the more motivated you become by seeing results, the more you start to believe that everybody deserves acupuncture. Nothing is theoretical anymore, everything is real and all about your life and your patients' lives. And just like you can't undo what a glacier does to the landscape, you can't undo what practicing community acupuncture does to your mind and your heart. It's permanent.

yep.
Just about an hour ago I was talking with one of my patients that I've become real close with. Told her that this morning on my walk to work I got these overwhelming waves of gratitude for so many things in my life, and especially for being able to do this work. Even though I'm helping lots of folks, I still think I'm getting the best part of the deal, because this feeds my soul like nothing else. She credits acupuncture with giving her life back, and thinks she's getting a really sweet deal too. We had a little moment together.
such a good description
of what happens...thank you.
