Community Acupuncture on "Marketplace" tonight
Posted September 2nd, 2008 by korbenp
Gather 'round the old Philco, folks; and turn it up. It's airing tonight! Just got a call from the writer, Joel Rose. He reminded us, by the way, that it's American Public Media that produces the show, not NPR. Nevertheless, it'll run on most NPR stations tonight, at 6:30 in most cities. Here's hoping that we represented well.

woo-hoo!
woo-hoo!
Schedule Alert!
Because of the a-hem- Republican convention, some cities, mainly in the west, will not be broadcasting the show! Other cities who air the show twice a day may only air it once! So if you are in one of these places either be sure to pick up the earlier feed (if your station airs it twice (hel-LO Tuscon!) or you have to go on the web and listen to a stream from another station. If you are affected go to the Marketplace website and find a station that's airing it. Then go to the radio station's website and listen to the stream.I'll be listening to WHYY's braodcast out of Philly at 6:30 eastern, 3:30 Pacific.
All times below are local.
The cities/states affected that I can tell are:
Oregon! OPB is not broadcasting it! Period!
Seattle and Olympia! Not broadcasting it! It looks like Mt Vernon, KMWS 90.1 is airing it at 3:30. Moses Lake, 91.5 has it at 3:30 and so does KWWS, Walla Walla 89.7
San Fransicso! They, KQED 88.5 will only broadcast it at 4pm
Sacramento, Stockton, Lake Tahoe- the local NPR station also looks like they are only broadcasting it at 3pm and not the later time.
Phoenix! We aren't sure by their website if its on at 6:30 or is pre-empted
Tuscon! It looks like its just on at 3 and not the later time
Austin! It looks like its on at its normal time of 6:30
Other cities: Its hard to tell because they don't show their daily schedules.
Is it possible to tape it and post a link it to this site?
This Luddite wonders if the above is possible. Here in OR it sounds like we cannot access it and I would love to post it to my website once I have worked out how to do that too.!!!
This is so fantastic.
Diane
once we hear...
our webmaster extraordinaire will make sure a link appears on CAN ASAP, so y'all can listen to it where ever you are! Also, I'm watching the "hit counter" to see what happens.....
Keep your ears on good buddies,
-Lupine.
Also
The Marketplace website (which I have linked in the first comment) will have the show archived for some time.
updated links
Here's the link to the Marketplace report. The audio is now embedded in the Korben's post.
Right on!
Right on, Korben and Ellen and Lisa (and the patients, whose names I forgot)!!!!
Just heard the piece and thought they did a pretty good job.
That was kind of an interesting tie-in with the medical "group treatment" model; it muddied some issues (we don't really do "group" treatments) but was kind of cool regardless. Great finishing quote, too: hey, it works!
Congratulations!
What a great piece on community acupuncture! I like the bit where they spoke about how the presidential candidates will need to look strongly for other answers to the healthcare woes... and here we are! Perfect timing, great interviews, positive light on our profession! Well done to everyone involved! Robert
Just plain
Just plain fantastic.
Congrats, guys. My only regret is that we didn't hear a response from Lisa to the "private is just better" person.
Thank you all for doing just an amazing job.
Kevin
I get a lot of calls from
I get a lot of calls from potential patients who are hesitant to come in because they fear their medical information will be shared with the "group." I imagine many patients just write it off as not for them because of this. It is important that we let people know that we respect their privacy, and that the patient sleeping across from them won't know their medical condition. The idea of group treatments is confusing to many people, they think of group therapy where everyone talks and shares with each other.
marketplace piece
that was lovely! my only regret was that CAN was not mentioned. but they list the link on their website, and the segment is already available to listen to or read as text and to download. here it is:

keep the chi ball rolling
Under the APR link which Tatyana posted, there is a place for comments...many of which are being left by so called "quack watchers"...including a number of hostile attacks on acupuncture.
Let's respond en masse, not from the perspective of self-interest, but in order that people who might be curious about acupuncture do not get poisoned in their opinions about acupuncture by these malicious and misleading comments.
Also...these comments themselves might get read on the air, which could keep the story alive and in the minds of the American public for a bit longer. Thanks Korben, Ellen, and Lisa!
p.s. I just posted the link to the CommuniChi blog and will also post it on our bulletin board at the clinic...asking patients to write in their comments. Let's throw our collective clout into this golden opportunity.

That "organization" likes to
That "organization" likes to post as consumers and cite themselves as the source of the info. And most likely the same person wrote all three negative posts. I have seen them do similar posts in different places. It's just so ridiculous, they have no real credibility, but the name could scare patients into believing it's a govt. organization. Apparently, the NCAHF operates out of a hair removal salon. These links have more info.

Great hearing you!
I heard you, Ellen and Lisa on the radio last night - excellent job! :)
response from a stranger
today i attended a networking lunch for a group of "sustainable" business folks and while standing in line for my buffet indian lunch i said hello to a fellow "networker". he loooked at my nametag and said: "oh, community acupuncture, you do it in recliners in a big space, right? i heard a story on public radio the other day while drving and i think it is a great idea to make it more affordable for people to get acupuncture." it was so exciting to talk to someone who not only heard the radio piece, but also understood the concept of CA quite well from this 3 minute story!

I rec'd a notecard last week
I rec'd a notecard last week from the chiropractor that I worked with in WI. She heard the NPR show in Milwaukee. I'll bet that it aired in other markets after the initial showing in early Sept. Once that PR starts spinning, it just takes on a life of its own, doesn't it?!
